Principals Essentials promotes "smart use" of mobile devices in school. 9 in 10 of today's elementary, middle and high school students believe that mobile devices will change the way students learn in the future (92 percent) and make learning more fun (90 percent), according to a new study conducted by Harris Interactive and released today by Pearson.
1/3 of elementary, middle and high school students said that they have used a tablet for school work this academic year (34 percent have used a full-size tablet and 32 percent have used a small tablet), and 44 percent said they have used a smartphone for school work. Among students who use a tablet for school work, more than half (52 percent) use a device that they own personally, rather than borrow from the school.
Since the majority of students want to use mobile devices in the classroom, and because so many now own mobile devices, BYOD (bring your own device) programs and the challenge of universal access will remain a compelling topic of discussion for education leaders.
It's far too simplistic to write off using mobile devices in school. We are swiftly becoming accustomed to — and perhaps even starting to prefer — online conversations and interactions that revolve around images and photos. They are often more effective at conveying a feeling or reaction than text and never boring. http://principalsessentials.com/benefit_text.html

"Master" Note Taking Posters introduced by Principals Essentials
It's no surprise. Geniuses like Einstein, Beethoven and DaVinci knew the benefits and wrote volumes. Inspired by the Masters, these posters are designed to improve your students' note taking skills and grades, while they learn more with less effort.
Only 10% of a lesson may last in a student's memory, but students who take and review notes can recall 80% of a lesson. Despite this benefit, only 65% of all students take notes during class. One reason students may have trouble writing notes is that they're not sure how to write effective notes. These posters, show the actual notebooks of Alexander Graham Bell, Ludwig Van Beethoven and Leonardo DaVinci, are designed to improve your students' note taking skills and grades.
Proper note taking plays a key role in a student's academic success. It is clear from our history that note taking has always been an important part of the learning process. Alexander Graham Bell, Ludwig Van Beethoven and Leonardo DaVinci were all devoted to their notebooks. Unfortunately, not all students learn the noteworthy skills necessary to take effective notes.
Most teachers assume that someone else must have already taught their students how to take and study proper notes. Taking notes is one of those skills that rarely gets addressed in schools. Not only does good note taking help us recall facts we may have forgotten, the act of writing things down and reviewing them later, helps many of us to remember them longer. In fact, writing and studying effective notes can result in higher student test scores.

Edison, Frankford, Benjamin Franklin, High School of the Future, Abraham Lincoln, Roxborough and South Philadelphia.
Principals Essentials' poster campaign targets K12 school students and focuses on the importance of early college preparation with quotes from actual students and clever graphic. This poster campaign was originally inspired by the findings of a Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation study that identified the primary characteristics of those schools that have the highest success rate of students accepted to college. The study found that the successful schools all sent a clear message to their students that they should focus on college as their goal.

Most students aren't ready for college, ACT data show. Most students are not adequately prepared to face the rigor of college, according to the latest ACT scores, which also show that the average composite score on the college-entrance exam fell from last year. That composite score dropped to 20.9 among high school students in 2013, the lowest in eight years. Since 2006, scores had been relatively flat at about 21.1, on a scale where 36 is perfect.
The report released by the Iowa City, Iowa-based organization found just 39 percent of test-takers in the class of 2013 met three or more of the ACT college-readiness benchmarks in English, reading, science, and math. Nearly one-third did not meet any. http://bit.ly/1i1R5Zv @college_readiness

New Famous Quotes Banner released in honor of Nelson Mandela
As Nelson Mandela once said, "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world." Education is the key to eliminating gender inequality, toreducing poverty, to creating a sustainable planet, to preventing needless deaths and illness, and to fostering peace. And in a knowledge economy, education is the new currency by which nations maintain economic competitiveness and global prosperity. Education is an investment, and one of the most critical investments we can make. This is true not only for the United States, but for countries around the world.

How to Take Better Notes Posters Introduced by Principals Essentials.
Principals Essentials, Inc. has introduced a new series called, "Take Smart Notes". This noteworthy poster campaign will help students understand the importance of note taking by showing famous notebooks from historical figures, like Beethoven, Bell and DaVinci. The posters also shows a checklist on how to write better notes and how it will help raise their test scores.
65% of all students take notes during class. One of the reasons students have trouble taking notes is that they're not really sure how to write effective notes and later study them. Many students attempt to capture an entire record of a class or lesson in their notes, word for word.
Studies on memory have shown that without a notebook review, 47% of what a person has just learned is forgotten in the first twenty minutes and 62% is forgotten after the first day.

Central Consolidated School District School Chooses Principals Essentials' Bully Prevention, College Readiness and Attendance Programs
The Central Consolidated Schools School District is located in Shiprock, NM and includes 17 schools that serve 6,658 students in grades PK through 12.
The Central Consolidated School District earned the highest-grade-point average in San Juan County, scoring higher overall than neighboring Farmington, Aztec, and Bloomfield school districts on the School Grade Report Cards released in July 2013 by the New Mexico Public Education Department.
Kirtland Central High School, led by Principal Shawna Becenti was only one of two schools in the county to earn an A. The school raised its grade from a C last year.
"It's a great feeling. Our students, teachers, and parents worked really hard," Becenti said. "You could feel the energy level at school assemblies, school presentations, and faculty meetings that we were on the road to excellence. It doesn't stop though – we have a lot more work to do.
"Common Core and our focus on college and career readiness helped," Becenti said, adding, "We also implemented an Ignition Program, which is peer-to-peer mentoring. It takes upper classmen and pairs them with freshmen. It provides our students with support – not only from their teachers but from a student mentor."

Motivation Matters: 40% Of High School Students Chronically Disengaged From School
Lack of motivation is a real and pressing problem. Upwards of 40 percent of high school students are chronically disengaged from school, according to a National Research Council report on motivation.
Students who are bored or inattentive or who put little effort to schoolwork are unlikely to benefit from better standards, curriculum, and instruction unless schools, teachers, and parents take steps to address their lack of motivation, the CEP papers conclude. On the other hand, students who are motivated to learn have higher achievement, show better understanding of the concepts they are taught, are more satisfied with school, and have lower dropout rates, according to a variety of studies reviewed by ED and colleagues.
School programs that try to motivate students by focusing on the goal of attending college or paying for their college tuition are more motivating if they immerse students in a "college-going culture" rather than just encouraging them to aspire to college and promising scholarships for tuition. This immersion approach includes providing academic, social and other supports, making clear why college was important, and outlining a path to get there.

Using the Power of Your Environment to Promote Positive Change
By MARGARITA TARTAKOVSKY, M.S. .
The environment is powerful in shaping our behavior. According to author and psychologist John C. Norcross, Ph.D, in his book Changeology: 5 Steps to Realizing Your Goals and Resolutions, this is a key lesson from social psychology.
Fortunately, we also have the power to shape our environment. This ability becomes especially important when we're trying to make positive changes in our lives, everything from doing your homework to arriving at school on time to getting more sleep to improving low self-esteem. But, interestingly, even though it's so helpful, according to Norcross's research, the technique of using our environment is underused. "People can be so preoccupied with examining their inner thoughts and feelings that they neglect to keep their surroundings in sync with their goal."
In Changeology, Norcross shares several key ways we can make the most of our environment to support our goals.
1. Create a positive environment.
According to Norcross, "If you don't see the appropriate environmental options around you, create the environment you need." He quotes writer Orison Swett Marden: "A strong, successful man is not the victim of his environment. He creates favorable conditions."
What kind of environment can you create to help you engage in positive changes? What things does your supportive environment include (or exclude)?
4. Add reminders to your environment.
Research has found that text messages help remind students to do their homework and reminders help students stay in school and stay on track, Norcross writes.
He also observed the power of reminders while consulting with a pharmaceutical company. The goal was to help patients take their medication. The medication was highly effective. But the regimen was complicated.
Norcross gave the patients a variety of reminders, including special pillboxes, watches with pre-programmed alarms and stickers for their calendars. These reminders led to a 90 percent compliance rate.
You might use the following reminders to foster your positive changes: Post-it notes on various mirrors; to-do lists on your desk and in your bag; and messages on your phone and computer.
Our environment plays a powerful role in shaping our behavior. Use that to your advantage when making positive changes in your life..

Bulling does NOT take a Summer Vacation.
The summer vacation has begun! The promise of warmer weather, more freedom to decide what to do, and participation in fun activities becomes much more of a challenge for young students. If a child was a target of a bully at school, they might be relieved to be out of that negative environment for a few, short months. However, the sad reality is they aren't safe from bullying when school is on summer break. Summer bullying often takes place at playgrounds, day camps, local neighborhoods, shopping malls, swimming pools and childcare centers. During the summer many young students and teens are often not well supervised. They are often in new environments with unfamiliar children for longer periods of time. Child behavior expectations in these surroundings may be unclear. These new, less supervised locations provides much more opportunity for bullies to choose a victim and make their summer very unpleasant. There are some things parents can do to reduce the chance their children might be the target of bully. Like only considering summer activities where the children are well-supervised by trained, caring adults and they value and create a respectful environment.

A new study confirms the belief that classroom attendance and participation is related to and affects a student's performance and grasp of the subject matter and is directly reflected in a student's grades.
Schools should develop positive student incentives to encourage good attendance. In addition, the school administration should design and implement programs that acknowledge a students effort to maintain or improve school attendance. An attendance poster campaign should convey to students that they are expected to attend all scheduled classes, stressing the importance of classroom participation, and the seriousness of unexcused student absences, tardiness, and early departures.
Examples of Attendance Incentives:1) Students with perfect attendance are given gifts. 2) Field trip arranged for students with perfect attendance. 3) Participation in extra curricula activities for the students.. 4) Students receive recognition awards for 100% attendance. 5) Students with perfect attendance selected to park their own spot. Principals Essentials Introduces a New Tardiness Prevention Program Called 'Timing is Everything'. Students who chronically come late to school disrupt the learning environment for the other students; they require more clerical work for the school's office staff and, most importantly, cost teaching time for everyone. In fact, the more time a student is late or absent from class has a direct effect on a school's achievement and academic performance on standardized tests. There is a direct correlation between chronic school tardiness and later chronic tardiness in the workforce.
Teenage students are very sensitive to 'fairness' issues and will notice if you apply rules to students but not teachers. Students will also notice if your school is not keeping track of tardiness. So let them know that you care and are aware when it comes to them being late or absent from class. If your students see that if being late or missing a few minute s of class only means missing 'chat time' with their friends than they won't see the point in being on time. So make sure to start classes and lesson plans on time, every time to prevent this from becoming a regular habit. Chronic tardiness, like school violence, can also be a form of rebellious behavior, signaling a problem at home or 'bullying' in school. So find out what is causing the student to be late before punishing or reprimanding them. Then address the problem accordingly with family counseling and implementing positive behavior support (PBS) strategies.
It is vitally important to establish good attendance habits now, for your students' future career success
